Tandem carefully develops software updates to ensure your safety and satisfaction. Please review the instructions and take time to understand the new features before beginning your update.

What's Included

This update adds Basal-IQ® technology to your pump, which helps reduce the frequency and duration of low-glucose events by using Dexcom G6 continuous glucose monitoring (CGM)^† values to predict glucose levels 30 minutes ahead and suspending insulin if they are expected to drop below 80 mg/dL.

Update Eligibility

This update requires a prescription from your healthcare provider.

Adding Basal-IQ technology to your t:slim X2™ insulin pump requires a prescription and completion of online training before you can receive the unique Update ID Code needed to update. You can log into the t:connect portal to confirm your eligibility and start the update process.

Update Your Pump

Here are the three simple steps to update the software on your t:slim X2 insulin pump:

Before You Begin

Basal-IQ technology only works with the Dexcom G6 CGM. If you are still using Dexcom G5 Mobile CGM and have Dexcom G5 supplies you plan to use, we recommend postponing this update until you are ready to switch to the new Dexcom G6 system.

If you are already using Dexcom G6 CGM and have an active sensor session when you update your pump, you will need to start the session again on your pump after the update is complete. The update process will NOT stop the sensor session, and you will not need to re-enter your transmitter ID. When your pump asks if you have a sensor code, tap SKIP. Your pump should backfill any data missed during the update. You can continue to view your Dexcom G6 CGM data on the Dexcom mobile app during the update process.

Please consult the Tandem Device Updater User Guide and have the following on hand:

A convenient time to stop all insulin delivery, detach your infusion set, and remove your cartridge. This update will take 15 to 30 minutes.
Your unique Update ID Number, which you should receive by email once we have received your prescription (if required) and you've completed your online training. This code expires 60 days from email receipt.
The pump serial number (contained in the email with your Update ID Number).
Compatible computer with an internet connection (wired ethernet is preferred).
A backup insulin delivery option, such as a syringe and long-acting insulin, in case there are any issues updating your pump. Your blood glucose (BG) meter so that you can check your BG prior to starting the update. Supplies to change your cartridge. We recommend performing the update when you are ready for a new cartridge.

Update Your Device

The Tandem Device Updater should automatically start after you install it on your computer. Follow the prompts to update your t:slim X2 insulin pump. The process should take less than 10 minutes to complete.

If the Tandem Device Updater encounters a condition that will not allow you to continue, you will see an error message on your computer screen. Follow the on-screen instructions to resolve the error and continue with your update. If you are unable to continue with your update, contact Customer Support at (877) 801-6901. If you have trouble connecting your pump or starting an update, reference the Troubleshooting section of the Tandem Device Updater User Guide.

Responsible Use of
Basal-IQ Technology

Systems like the t:slim X2 insulin pump with Basal-IQ technology are not substitutes for active diabetes management, as there are common scenarios in which automated systems cannot prevent hypoglycemia. The Basal-IQ feature relies on continuous CGM readings and will not be able to predict glucose levels and suspend insulin delivery if your CGM is not working properly or is unable to communicate with your pump. Be sure to always use your pump, cartridges, CGM, and infusion sets as instructed and check them regularly to make sure they are working properly. Always pay attention to your symptoms, actively monitor your glucose levels, and treat according to your healthcare provider’s recommendations.

Important Safety Information

RX ONLY. The t:slim X2 pump and Basal-IQ technology are intended for single patient use for the management of diabetes mellitus in persons six years of age and greater. The t:slim X2 pump and Basal-IQ technology are indicated for use with U-100 insulin only. t:slim X2 insulin pump: The t:slim X2 insulin pump with interoperable technology is an alternate controller enabled (ACE) pump that is intended for the subcutaneous delivery of insulin, at set and variable rates, for the management of diabetes mellitus in people requiring insulin. The pump is able to reliably and securely communicate with compatible, digitally connected devices, including automated insulin dosing software, to receive, execute, and confirm commands from these devices. Basal-IQ technology: Basal-IQ technology is intended for use with a compatible integrated continuous glucose monitor (iCGM, sold separately) and ACE pump to automatically suspend delivery of insulin based on iCGM readings and predicted glucose values. The bolus calculator is indicated for the management of diabetes by people with diabetes by calculating an insulin dose or carbohydrate intake based on user entered data. Users of the t:slim X2 pump and Basal-IQ technology must: be able and willing to use the insulin pump, CGM, and all other system components in accordance with their respective instructions for use; test blood glucose levels as recommended by their healthcare provider; demonstrate adequate carb-counting skills; maintain sufficient diabetes self-care skills; see healthcare provider(s) regularly; and have adequate vision and/or hearing to recognize all functions of the pump, including alerts, alarms, and reminders.
