Off-The-Grid Charging Options to Power Your Pump in the Wild

As the only rechargeable insulin pumps on the market, Tandem insulin pumps have kept many millions of disposable batteries out of landfills worldwide since becoming available in 2012.1 We’re proud to do our small part to help reduce disposable battery waste. On that note, we often get questions about what happens when Tandem pumpers are out with their #tsliminthewild away from power outlets.

Tandem pumps are powered by an internal lithium polymer rechargeable battery. A full charge will last 4-7 days with normal use depending on how often you interact with your pump. Accessories for charging from wall outlets and from PC USB ports are included with the pump. A car power adapter is not included with the pump and may be purchased separately so you can top off your charge right before you hit the trail.

For portable charging, a battery pack with a USB Micro-B output connector is a good place to start. Just make sure that both your pack and cable are working before you go off-the-grid. There are many types of portable battery packs with USB Micro-B connectors out there to choose from!

We recommend periodically checking the battery level indicator, charging the pump for a short period of time every day (10 to 15 minutes), and also avoiding frequent full discharges.

If you choose to disconnect from the pump while charging, check with your healthcare provider for specific guidelines. Depending on the length of time you are disconnected, you may need to replace missed basal and/or bolus insulin. Check your blood glucose before disconnecting from the pump and again when you reconnect.

With the right equipment and advanced planning, you can enjoy your adventures away from power and plugs!
