Tandem Diabetes Care Acquires Sugarmate, a Popular Mobile App for People with Diabetes Who Use Insulin

We are excited to announce that Sugarmate will be joining the Tandem family!

Sugarmate, the developer of a popular app that visualizes diabetes therapy data in innovative ways, allows users to log health and nutrition information, and can provide notifications and alerts to users, their family and their caregivers.

This acquisition is in line with Tandem’s mission to improve the lives of people with diabetes. With a strategic focus on leading in insulin therapy management, we are continuing to build a portfolio of digital tools and platforms designed to help people with diabetes spend more time focusing on their lives and less on their diabetes.

Sugarmate has developed a compelling application that aligns well with our commitment to relentless innovation. Many of the features offered by the Sugarmate™ app are complementary to Tandem’s current efforts and we look forward to aligning our future mobile health offerings to bring specific benefits to our users and a broader community of people with diabetes.

Tandem and Sugarmate will continue to operate as they are now for the time being. We intend to support Sugarmate’s focus on delivering advanced data tools to people with diabetes regardless of their insulin delivery preferences.

We’re sure you have many questions, and we have attempted to answer some here. We will provide updates as we have them.

1. How does Sugarmate differ from what Tandem does?

Sugarmate has developed a popular app used by pumpers and non-pumpers that visualizes diabetes therapy data in innovative ways, allows users to log health and nutrition information, and can provide notifications and alerts to users, their family and their caregivers. Many of the features offered by the Sugarmate app are complementary to Tandem’s current efforts and we look forward to aligning our future digital health offerings for Tandem pump users and a broader community of people with diabetes.

2. Will my insulin pump data be available in the Sugarmate app?

Not initially. Many of the features offered by Sugarmate are complementary to Tandem’s current efforts. We are currently evaluating the best way to align our future digital health offerings for Tandem pump users.

3. What do I need to do to start using the Sugarmate app?

See https://sugarmate.io/ for more information on the Sugarmate app, and how to get started.

4. What does this acquisition mean for Tandem’s mobile app?

The Sugarmate app is not intended to replace the t:connect® mobile app, which is expected to roll out to t:slim X2™ insulin pump users this summer. The t:connect mobile app is being developed as a discreet secondary display for t:slim X2 pump users to view pump data on their mobile device and wirelessly upload therapy data to the cloud-based t:connect web application.

5. What happens to Sugarmate app users once Tandem acquires the app?

Sugarmate will continue to serve its current customers and operate as a standalone entity in the near term. Sugarmate app users, and anyone wanting to use the Sugarmate app, will continue to go through the Sugarmate app and website for information and support. Tandem is committed to continuing to support the Sugarmate app user community with innovative data tools, regardless of their choice of therapy.

6. What happens to the Sugarmate team once Tandem acquires the app?

The Sugarmate app was developed by Josh Juster. He is the only employee and will be joining the Tandem family to continue leading Sugarmate.

Josh Juster Josh Juster, Sugarmate Founder

7. Will all Sugarmate app users be required to use Tandem pumps in the future?

No. A Tandem pump will not be required to use the Sugarmate app. The intent behind the acquisition is to accelerate our digital health roadmap with digital assets that are best in class. The Sugarmate app is not intended to replace the Tandem mobile app currently in development for Tandem pump users. Sugarmate will continue to serve its current customers and operate as a standalone entity in the near term.

Please join us in welcoming Josh and Sugarmate to the family!
